The Toorak mansion set to break Melbourne’s sale record

A Melbourne eastern suburb’s mansion priced at $65 million to $70 million is the most expensive home ever to come on the market in Victoria.

The colossal estate, named Toorak House, at 17 St Georges Road in Toorak is a few days away from officially hitting the market and photos have not yet been released, but agency Marshall White confirmed the price tag on Thursday.

If the 7854-square-metre property achieves that sum, it will obliterate the Victorian residential real estate record.

The Victorian price benchmark is the $52.5 million-paid-for Stonnington mansion in the neighboring suburb of Malvern, which changed owners in 2017.

Toorak House, a 1939 Georgian Revival estate, was once used as Victoria’s Government House and was last sold in the 1970s.

St Georges Road in Toorak is one of the elite streets of Melbourne. Mansions of monumental size and luxurious design line the boulevard, which runs between the main arterial of Toorak Road and the Yarra River.

Behind high gates, botanic gardens unfold at number 17, with a discreet entry and a long driveway for privacy and security. The mansion itself is set far back from the street.

The established gardens include a tennis court, a Victorian glasshouse and a separate guest house.
