Benji Marshall on Celebrity Apprentice clash: ‘Had a bit of a brief from HR’

This season’s winner Benji Marshall has revealed what really went down between he and a Celeb Apprentice rival after their tense on-screen showdown.

Benji Marshall has taken aim at one of his Celebrity Apprentice co-stars, admitting the tension between the pair had gotten so heated that HR was forced to step in during filming.

In an interview with the Kyle and Jackie O Show this morning, this season’s winner claimed Ronnie Caceres wasn’t “authentic”, which the hosts pointed out that they’d heard from others.

“We’ve had a lot of people in and say, ‘Ronnie would do things and say like, oh that was just for TV, off the air’,” Jackie O said.

“He really had a go at me one day, I said ‘please Ronnie, not today, I’m having a bit of bad day’, and he still went … I said, ‘mate, what are you doing? And he said, ‘well, do you wanna make good TV or not?’” Marshall revealed.

“I said (to him), ‘at the end of the day, you’re forgetting we’re here for charity Ronnie, not for you’. It’s funny though, he’s famous for being on reality TV, so I think he understands what it’s about. But I think he tried to play a role that, in the end, he doesn’t look so good.”

Kyle then jumped in, asking “Why didn’t you just knock him out?” leading Marshall to hint that things had begun to escalate between the pair.

“It’s funny, I did get a bit of a brief from HR on that, ’cause one day I thought I was going to … I don’t like bringing it up, I don’t want to bag the bloke.

Marshall explained that it had happened after The Block star joked that fellow contestant Jean Kittson, 66, had “dementia” in front of mortified business executives.

Afterwards, she explained what had happened to Marshall, who said he was “really disappointed” in Caceres.

Later, the former NRL star barked at him: “Don’t touch me, I already heard what you did to Jean.”

Marshall elaborated on his on-screen reaction to Kyle and Jackie O on Wednesday.

“He said she had dementia, twice, and I hit him up. It’s not a thing to joke about,” he explained.

“My wife’s grandma died from dementia, I know a lot of people who’ve had it. whether he thought it was funny or not, that’s not the point. I just hope he learned from that, that you just don’t say that … but he was playing a role.”

During the interview, Marshall also revealed that the autobiographical TV pitch he’d made in a challenge on the show about growing up without a father and his desire to explore his roots could actually become a reality.

“Warner Bros followed it up, I’ve already filmed a pilot for it,” he revealed.

“They asked, ‘would you make it?’ and I had to think about it, because you’re delving into a part of your life. I’ve never shared that story, no one really knew that I don’t know my dad.

“My mum had me at 15, a really young age … I asked her one time, ‘who’s my dad?’, because I was being bullied at school about it, and I saw the look on her face – and it wasn’t looks really good. So I never asked again. I was about 7.

“I don’t actually want a relationship with my dad, because I’ve got her. But I do want to know – am I like, Egyptian? Am I Indian?”

Marshall was announced as the winner of Celebrity Apprentice 2022 on Tuesday night, beating runner-up Darren McMullen, and scoring $487,105 for his chosen charity, Souths Cares.
