Australian swim coach Dick Caine charged with historical child sexual abuse offenses

A former Australian swim coach who has been charged over the alleged sexual abuse of two girls in the 1970s only has six months to live, a court has heard.

Dick Caine, 76, was arrested this morning at his home in Condell Park in Sydney’s south-west and later charged with nine offences.

Mr Caine appeared at Bankstown Court via video link from Bankstown Police Station this afternoon.

His wife, Jennifer Caine, gave evidence during his appearance, revealing that Mr Caine is suffering from terminal lung and throat cancer.

She said he had “about six months” to live and was receiving palliative care.

Ms Caine also said there had been “endless” support for her family and her husband “has done a lot for the community”.

NSW Police said they received information about alleged multiple sexual assaults of a teenage girl at a swim school in Sydney’s south.

During their investigation, police said they also received information about the alleged assault of another teenage girl at the same school.

“We will alleviate [Dick Caine] was the coach of the young girls at the time of the alleged offending,” Acting Superintendent Chris Nicholson said.

He said the girls were 15 and 16 years old at the time of the alleged offences, which occurred “in a number of locations in and around the southern Sydney area in the mid-1970s”.

Superintendent Nicholson said investigations were ongoing.

“I would like to acknowledge the courage and the bravery of the alleged victims who have come forward,” he said.

“We encourage all victim survivors of sexual abuse living in the community to come forward and tell police their story.”

Mr Caine is widely recognized as one of Australia’s most successful swimming coaches.

Earlier this year, he was inducted into the Australian Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame.

Mr Caine has denied all the allegations and will face court again in August.
